Biography

Christmas was born in 1827 and died in 1917. He was the son of Jonathan Patterson and Mary Waterton.

He was baptised on 29 December 1827 at St. Nicholas’ Church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He married his step-sister Priscilla Charlotte Partridge BAXFIELD[1] during Q1 1857.

Priscilla and Christmas PATTERSON[2] had the following children:

  • Christmas Thomas PATTERSON (1860-1929)
  • Priscilla Louisa PATTERSON (1866-1967)
  • Amy Mary PATTERSON (1868-1961)

Christmas was sentenced to 1 month imprisonment for larceny in 1844. In 1901 he was brought to trial for assault but the charge was dismissed.

He entered the Royal Navy and served onboard the HMS Leander during the Crimean War, and the HMS Simoom in the Second China War. He was eventually pensioned off from the Coastguard in 1873.

  • 1861 - onboard the HMS Simoom at Whampod, Canton River, China, he was captain of the main top.
  • 1871 - living with Priscilla and their three children at Coast Guard Station, Rye Harbour, Icklesham, Sussex. He was a commissioned boatman in the coastguard.
  • 1881 - living with Priscilla and two of their children at Adam Avenue Garden, Great Yarmouth. He was a pensioner.
  • 1891 - living with Priscilla and their youngest child at 1 Adam Avenue Garden, Great Yarmouth. He was a sailor.
  • 1901 - living with Priscilla and their eldest daughter at 14 Stafford Road, Great Yarmouth. He was a naval pensioner.
  • 1911 - living with Priscilla and their eldest daughter at 195 Stafford Road, Great Yarmouth. He was a naval pensioner.
