Mathias Pautler was 24 years old when he was drafted in July 1918. He went to Camp Dix, New Jersey for basic training and on October 8, 1918 was assigned to the Army’s Ordnance Department. The Department was responsible for managing the Army’s arsenals and coordinating with private industry in the manufacture of weapons and ammunition used for the war.
Mathias Pautler’s first assignment was ordnance guard at Camp Amatol, N.J. The Ordnance Department had built a munitions plant in 1918 in southern New Jersey to supply ammunition for the armed forces.
Mathias Pautler was a guard at that facility. In January 1919, Mathias Pautler was transferred to the General Ordnance Department at Baltimore, Maryland. He was discharged from the Army on April 3, 1919.
Lancaster, N.Y. had a connection with the Army’s Ordnance Department through the American Car & Foundry Co. in Depew. In February 1918, the Lancaster Enterprise reported that the Company was spending “hundreds of thousands of dollars in rebuilding and enlarging their plant in order to equip it with the most costly and modern machines known to munition making.” The American Car & Foundry Co. had been awarded a $50 million contract to manufacture six-inch artillery shells. According to the newspaper, “Some 4000 men will be given employment working in shifts of eight hours, day and night.” One of those workmen was John P Ott, son of Jacob Ott and Catherine Nuwer Ott. His September 12, 1918 Draft Registration Card identified him as an ammunition maker at American Car & Foundry Co.
