Biography

James Payne aka Paine was born in 1821 in Warwick, Warwickshire, England to Charles Payne and Charlotte (Squires) Payne.

James Paine, son of Charles, a labourer, & Charlotte, residing at Wall Dyke, was christened on 1 Apr 1821 at St Mary, Warwick.[1]

In 1841 James Payne (age 15-19) lived at Royal Kent Street in Leicester St Margaret, Leicestershire with his brother-in-law John Harrison (20-24), sister Eliza Harrison (20-24), and nephew Charles Harrison (1).[2]

James Payne (a minor, residing at Royal Kent Street, son of Charles Payne) married Ann Woolmer (a minor, residing at Old Mill Lane, daughter of Samuel Woolmer) on 25 Dec 1844 at St Margaret's, Leicester.[3] ["minor" means under 21, though James was actually a bit older (his age is consistantly given as a couple of years younger than it should be from here on) - people could marry as minors but required parental approval.] The marriage was registered in Leicester in the last quarter of the year.[4]

James and Ann had twelve children:

In 1851 James Payne (age 27 [~30], Machinist) lived at Humberstone Gate in St Margaret, Leicester with his wife Ann (22) and two daughters: Emma (3, Scholar) and Laura (1, Scholar).[5]

In 1861 James Payne (age 36 [~40], Iron Turner) lived at Fox Lane in Leicester St Margaret with his wife Ann (32) and five daughters: Emma (13, Warehouse Girl Hosiery), Laura (11, Nurse Girl), Anna M (9, Scholar), Elizabeth (5, Scholar), and Jane (3, Scholar).[6]

In 1871 James Payne (age 47 [~50], Iron Turner) lived in Leicester with his wife Ann (42) and six children: Anne M (19, Elastic Web Worker), Elizabeth (15, Hat Trimmer), Jane (13, Scholar), Alice (9, Scholar), Amy (7, Scholar), and James (1).[7]

In 1881 James Payne (age 57 [~60], Engine Fitter Factory) lived at Court A in Leicester St Margaret with his wife Ann (52, Engine Fitter Wife) and four children: Jane (23, Shoe Fitter), Amy (17, Shoe Machinist), James (11, Scholar), and Bertha (8, Scholar).[8]

In 1891 James Payne (age 67 [~70], Engine & Machine Maker) lived at Chatham Street in Leicester with his wife Ann (62).[9]

James Payne passed away in 1892, aged 69 [~71] years. His death was registered in Leicester in the last quarter of the year.[10]
