Barnett Payne was a Virginia colonist.

It is believed that Barnett Payne was born in England and was the son of John and Mary Paine. [1][2] The last mention of Barnett in records was in 1741, and it is thought that he died soon after this transaction.[3][4]

It is believed he married Elizabeth (last name unknown, but possibly Trigg) [5] about 1690, and that they may have had the following children:

  1. Ann Payne was born in Middlesex County, Virginia about 1693[6]
  2. Barnett Payne was born in Virginia about 1693
  3. William Paine was born in Virginia about 1698
  4. John Payne was born in Virginia about 1705
  5. Mary Payne was born in Virginia about 1710

Some believe he may also have had a son named Joseph Payne, who was born in Virginia about 1725, but there is no documentation to back up this claim. [7] Some descendants of Joseph Payne believe he may have been the illegitimate son of Ann Payne, which would make Joseph the grandson of Barnett. [8]

In 1704, Barnet is listed as living in/owning 130 acres in King and Queen County. [9] During his life, Barnett Paine was involved in land transactions in King and Queen County and, later, Spotsylvania County, Virginia. [10] [11] [12] [13] He eventually owned more around 300 acres. [14] He served as the administrator of the estate of his son, Barnett Paine, Jr., who died in 1740. [15]

  6. The Parish Register of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Countv, V irginia from 1653 to 1812 (Baltimore, 1964), p. 52. Middlesex County and King and Queen County were adjoining counties, so the Barnard Paine here was most likely the Bernard Paine on the 1704 Quit Rent Roll of King and Queen County.
  7. According to John C Payne in the "The Big Payne Book A History Of The Payne Family Of Virginia, Western North Carolina, Tennessee, And Missouri," he stated "The author, on I0 February 2006, went through every listing on Rootsweb.com and FamilyScarch.com that listed Barnett Paine Jr. and the father of Joseph Payne, and in not a single instance was there any documentation to back up the assertion that Joseph was the son of Barnett Paine Jr. Second, an even more serious roadblock concerns DNA testing. Several ofBarnett Paine Sr's descendants have had DNA testing done and they arc all grouped together as Lineage 5, while descendants ofJoseph and Phebe Payne were listed as an unassigned lineage."
