HENRY PAYNE, son of Daniel and Martha (Frazier) Payne; born Sullivan County, Tennessee, 10 February 1813.[1] According to his death record, he was a married farmer, 39 years old, when he died of typhoid fever in Monroe County, Kentucky, 23 October 1852; the record names his parents: Daniel and Martha Payne.[2] In 1850, Henry was the owner of one slave: a fifteen-year-old female, classified as black. He was married in Monroe County by William Howard on 1 January 1835, to MARY LEVESTA “POLLY” HARRIS (she was called “Polly Harris” on the marriage record).[3] A daughter of Francis and Sarah (Kays/Keys) Harris,[4] Mary Levesta was born in Monroe County on 5 March 1819;[5] she died on 7 May 1891 in Sullivan County, Missouri, at the home of her daughter Martha T.T. (Payne) Morrow—as the result of swallowing a mouthful of pins, pins that were used for fastening fashionable large sleeves to a dress.[6]

↑ In my grandmother’s Record of the Payne Family, she named Henry Payne’s father and grandfather, providing birthdates for Henry, his wife, and his father; then she named all the children of Henry and Mary (Harris) Payne, and recorded their birthdates; then all the children of Mary (Harris) (Payne) Matthews and her second husband. My grandmother--Maud Ellen (Morrow) Boyd--seems to have copied all this information from a family Bible, probably belonging to her own grandmother, Mary (Harris) Payne—all names and dates she supplied check out with public records about the Henry Payne family.
