Matilda was baptised 6 Jan 1846 at Cockfighter's Creek Wollombi NSW the daughter of Edward Payne and Ann HANRATTY. Matilda died at Mayfield, Newcastle in 1927 and was buried at the Sandgate cemetery aged about 81 years. Married to Joseph MERRICK at Howes Valley in 1865.

MAYFIELD: The funeral of the late Mrs Matilda Merrick took place on Monday from the residence of her daughter. Mrs James Merrick, Mayfield East. The deceased who was 81 years of age, leaves three sons and three daughters, 42 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. The interment took place in the Church of England section, Sandgate cemetery. The Rev Mr Hamilton of Tighe's Hill, officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs Burgess, Kearns, Ball and E Merrick. Wreaths from the following were placed on the grave: Mrs Squance; Mrs G Burgess; Mrs C McPherson; Mrs G Isaac; Mrs E Kearns; Mrs G Ball; The Merrick family; Clara; Workmen, Waratah Council [immortelle].
