Biography

Emeline (Payne) Burrous lived in Appalachia, in Ohio.

Emeline C. Payne was born on August 30, 1838 in Ohio.[1][2],[3],[4] Her parents were Rufus Payne and Mary Perkins.[4]

In about 1854, at the age of 16, Emeline married Stephen Douglas Burrous.[1],[5],[6]

In 1865 the couple moved to Iowa, where they resided for two years and then moved to Kansas (where Stephen passed away).[1] The couple had several children including Hattie (Burrous) Bockover, S.D. Burrous, Sarah (Burrous) Keller, Minnie (Burrous) Meekins, Charles Burrous, and Drue Burrous, all of Ferndale, and Lucy (Burrous) Atwood (of Galena, Kansas as of 1918), Rosa (Burrous) Bedford (of Houston, Texas as of 1918), Lewis Burrous and John Burrous (both of Bronson, Kansas as of 1918), Dollie (Burrous) Chamberlin (of Portland, Oregon as of 1918).[1]

In 1912, Emeline moved to Ferndale, Washington.[1] Shortly prior to her death, Emeline was burned severely around her limbs from unknown cause and was hospitalized.[1] Her funeral was held at the M. E. Church in Ferndale on March 20, 1912 and the Rev R. L. Sprague presided.[1] Emeline was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, Ferndale, Whatcom County, Washington, USA.[1]

In addition to leaving behind her several children, Emeline reportedly left behind forty-three grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren by 1918.[1]
