Biography

Prudence Peachy, daughter of John Peachy and his wife Ann, was named in the will of her father. [1]

In the heraldry of the King families in England published by George Austin Morrison in 1910, George King of Woodham Mortimer and Cold Norton, Essex was placed as a son of Thomas King of Purleigh, Essex, who married, as a widower, Ann Peachy; widow of John Peachy, on 09 Jul 1571 at Woodham Ferrers, Essex. John Peachy and his son Latimer Peachy had been buried on 17 Nov 1570 at Woodham Ferrers, after his son John Peachy Jr. had been buried there on 03 Aug 1570, [4] before and after John Peachy Sr. had drafted his will on 10 Nov 1570. [5]

In the name of God, amen; the tenth day of November in the year of our Lord God one thousand five hundred seventy, and in the thirteenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Elizabeth, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France, and Ireland; defender of the faith, etc.

I John Peachy of Woodham Ferrers in the County of Essex; yeoman, of good and perfect memory; thanks be given to God, do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following; that is to say,

  • First I bequeath my soul to God Almighty, my only Savior and Redeemer, through whose mercy I trust to be saved, and my body to be buried in the church yard of Woodham Ferrers aforesaid.
  • Item: I give to Anne Ellis, my sister, one bullock to be delivered by my executors next Easter, at a price of 26 shillings, 8 pence.
  • Item: I give to the sons of her two brothers, Austin Ellis and Arthur Ellis, 3 pounds, 6 shillings, 8 pence to be paid to them at 20 years of age, and the one to be the heir of the other.
  • Item: I give to Prudence and Johan; my daughters, my house and land called Tissentones, and each of them a pair of canvas sheets.
  • Item: I give to Edward; my son, my house and land called Moses and by such other names as it appears in the copy, immediately after my the decease of my wife.
  • Item: I give to Edward; my son, my house with an orchard called Gunnels, immediately after the decease of my wife.
  • Item: I give the same Edward my spruce chest and an iron beam with scales, a lead and half a lead of weight.
  • Item: I give to William; my son, my hutch that my papers are kept in.
  • Item: I give to William; my son, my house and land called Sweetings; also known as Clovels.
  • Item: I give to Latimer; my son, one croft called Buttecroft and two other crofts lying against the highway, the one of this side Scoots tenement, and the other of the other side his tenement being copyhold, and to be surrendered to their use.
  • Item: I will that my brother John Camber shall be gardener to William and Latimer; my two youngest sons, to take up the rent of their land to their use, until such time as they come of age, and the same to be let at such reasonable rent as it is now, or hereafter may be, and he to be bound to make accounts to them at the age of twenty years, at which time it shall be due to them to receive the same.
  • Item: I give to my three sons Edward, William, and Latimer forty pounds of money to be divided among them equally at the age of twenty years, to be paid by my executrix, and if any of them die; the one to be the heir of the others.
  • Item: I give to Margaret my servant and Johan my daughter; each of them, a sheep immediately after my decease.
  • Item: I give to my brother Camber a little year-old colt.
  • Item: I give unto Roger Northen a lamb to him, and another to his wife, to be delivered by my executrix immediatley after my decease.
  • Item: I make John Camber of Tylbery and William Egeot of Raleigh my overseers; provided always that if my wife do marry before dies, he that marries her shall put in sufficient sureties to my brother Camber and my brother William Egeot of Raleigh, to pay to my children their legacies of my will after my death.
  • The residue of all my movable and unmovable goods unbequeathed, my debts being paid, and all charges answered I give and bequeath to my wife Anne conditionally: that she shall bring up my three children in the fear of God, and the same Anne; my foresaid wife, I ordain and make my sole executrix; willing her to see this my last will fulfilled and kept.
  • These being witnesses: Roger Northen and Francis Salmon with others.
