Biography

Emma was born around 1861-1865.

Emma PEACOCK was named as the mother in the birth registration of Edith Matilda Rosabell CHAMBERLAIN. Edith was born on the 10th July 1884 in Adelaide. The father was registered as John CHAMBERLAIN [1].

Emma BONHAM (a suspected alias of Emma PEACOCK) was named as the mother in the birth registration of John William Frank PEACOCK. John was born on the 26th May 1887 in Adelaide. The father was registered as John PEACOCK (a suspected alias of John CHAMBERLAIN) [2].

Emma HOWARD (a suspected alias of Emma PEACOCK) was named as the mother in the birth registration of Olive Myrtle PEACOCK. Olive was born on the 4th February 1890 in Adelaide. The father was registered as John PEACOCK (a suspected alias of John CHAMBERLAIN) [3]

Emma's son, named as John W F HERBERT, was admitted to the Sturt Street School on the 10th May 1897. His date of birth was given as 6th April 1887, and his parent or guardian was Donatus HERBERT, a bootmaker of Hanson Place, Adelaide.

Emma's daughter, named as Olive Myrtle HERBERT, was admitted to the Sturt Street School on the 10th May 1897. Her date of birth was given as 9th November 1889, and her parent or guardian was Donatus HERBERT, a bootmaker of Hanson St, Adelaide.

Emma PEACOCK married Donattus DE HERBERT (sic) on the 7th June 1899 at the Registry Office, Adelaide. Emma was registered as 34 (DOB~1865), single, and the daughter of William PEACOCK. Donatus was registered as 35 (DOB~1864), single, and the son of Francis George DE HERBERT [4].

Emma's son, named as John HERBERT, was admitted to the Adelaide hospital on the 10 April 1900 suffering from Salmonella poisoning. He died there on the 25th April 1900. He was registered as 13, Church of England, born in South Australia, and living at 17 ??? St Parkside. His death registration additionally gives his father as Donattus HERBERT [5]

Emma's daughter, named as Edith Mary Veronica HERBERT, married William Ernest MARCH on the 9th January 1905 at the Catholic Church in Port Adelaide [6]. Donatus HERBERT was listed as her father.

Emma's daughter, named as Olive Myrtle DE HERBERT, married George Clifford LEAKER on the 11th February 1914 at St Margaret's Church in Woodside [7]. Donattus DE HERBERT was listed as her father.

Emma DE HERBERT died on the 8th February 1942 in hospital at College Park. She was registered as 81 (DOB~1861), the widow of Donitis DE HERBERT (sic), and living at Semaphore at the time of her death [8].

HERBERT.—On February 8, at private hospital, Emma, dearly beloved mother of Mesdames Edith March, of 114 Esplanade, Semaphore, and Olive Leaker, of Port Pirie, aged 31 years. Peacefully sleeping [9].

Emma was buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery on the 9th February 1942:

HERBERT.—The friends of the late Mrs. Emma Herbert are respectfully informed that her remains were privately laid to rest in the Cheltenham Cemetery on Monday. The Rev. F. B. Hewitson kindly officiated.
F. W. MOORE, Funeral Director. 129 Military rd., Semaphore [10].
