Biography

1776 Project
Private James Pearcy served with Bedford County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
James Pearcy is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A201561.

James Pearcy, 4 May 1763 Bedford County, Virginia - 23 Jun 1843 Slickford, Wayne, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Smelser/Smeltzer/Snelser.

James served as a Private under command of Captain David Beard; Cols. Charles Lynch and William Trigg in Bedford County Militia, Virginia as per the DAR record

13APR2018 added from notes of James Wayne Piercy, Jr.: Find A Grave: Memorial #60501857 Pearcy Farm in Slickford, KY: I am back at home today. I can tell you lots about the family, but I do not like to post to web pages. No wonder I couldn't find Nathan with all that moving. I thought he might have dropped down into Tennessee. I know where the farm is in Wayne County and 15 years ago Anon and I visited graves there.

The line begins with John Pearcy and Anna Margaret Spenser from Virginia. They lived first in Buckingham County and then moved to Bedford County, Virginia. They had 11 children, James was number 3 and he married Elizabeth Smelzer. They moved from Bedford County, Virginia, to Wayne County County after the Revolutionary War where James (His DAR number is: A201561) received a land grant. They had 12 children: 5 boys and 7 girls. The older three boys, John, Charles, and Jacob did not come to Kentucky. William (Anon's ancestor) had married Cenia (Sena) Hatcher in Bedford County, Virginia, and came with James. Nathaniel came (6th child) and the younger girls. Rebecca was born between William and Nathaniel and stayed in Virginia also.

The farm was at Slickford which is 20 miles south of Monticello, Kentucky. Anon's line is James, William, Mark, Freland, Richard, Roy Marvin, Kenneth Marvin. Freland and his wife are buried on the farm we visited with other graves. I do not remember which other graves were there. Elizabeth lived to be into her 90s, I think. She was still going to court in 1850 trying to get an increase in her Revolutionary Widow's pension. At that time she was living with her daughter, Polly who had married Lorenzo Dow Kanaster. Note: Lorenzo Dow was an early American evangelist. Many children were names for him. It would be today as if families names their child William or Billy Graham. I seem to remember some note recently that Polly and her husband divorced. I lost track of them in the census also.

Slickford is very near the Tennessee/Kentucky line, probably 10 miles south. Descendants went south into Tennessee into Fentress and Pickett County. Anon's grandparents moved to Tennessee in 1919. His father was only one of 10 born in Tennessee. They married across the Tennessee line in Chaunte, Tennessee, thought I would never find it on my back roads map. Some marriages were in Clinton County, Kentucky, (Albany) as it was moved directly west of Slickford rather than north back to Monticello, the county seat of Wayne County. Also, the counties were added and changed over the years.

Nathaniel came to Kentucky unmarried, by my deduction.

I have seen the Scott name in Kentucky. Scott families were in Wayne County by 1810. James Peercy and his family was in Wayne County by 1820. I have an index of the census from 1810 to 1880, which I purchased 15 years ago. A wonderful asset. Scott Head of Households: 1810: Jacob, John, Martin, Nathaniel, William, William 1820: James, Jeduther, Leonard Nathan, John, Sr., William, Sr. William, William. 1830: Jedulthen, Jeff, John Leonard, Samuel Stephen, William 1840: Elkanan, John S., Samuel, Stephen 1850: Elcanah, Jefferson, Stephen, Thomas, William 1860: Jefferson, Thomas 1870: Enicly, Henry, Landon, Mariah, Sarah Seth, Thomas 1880: Andrew J., Landon, Sarah, Thomas, William L.

Nathan Piercey is listed only in the 1830 census. The others are James and William. All living next door or close together. Nathan does not appear again on the census in Wayne County, Kentucky. Just got home last night so it will still be a few days or maybe after the first of the year before I can really send you any details. There are a few web sites that have some of the early Peercy information. Names spelling: The Virginia spelling is Pearcy. Names changed in deeds around 1850 when individuals were not certain how to spell their names and others wrote them for them in deed, marriage license, etc. We have kept Peercy, even though Anon has cousins who use Piercy.

In Wayne County, all descend from James Pearcy, the spellings are Peercy, Piercy, Piercey, and a few other combinations. Ken's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather used Peercy. Hope this helps a little, until I have more time. I will see if I can find you some of the links that I know are correct. I may have a word document of them, I do that often. Anonymous

I look forward to comparing notes with you. I'm wondering when your husband's ancestor William was born. Also, do you know where James and Elizabeth Piercy are buried? Our family records indicate Nathan married Elizabeth Scott, who was born AUG 1 1803 in Wayne County, KY. Sometime after 1828 He moved with his family to Illinois where my ancestor James Wayne Piercy was born FEB 23 1837. Sometime later the family moved to Decatur County, IA. I have visited the graves of Nathan and James Wayne and have posted the locations on www.findagrave.com.Please feel free to post any of your information to my family website. Sincerely, Jim

Date: 07/25/00 01:38:55 AM From: “_____" To: CC: Subject: Piercy Hi, I just came across your post on the Piercy site. My Piercey's with a “e” were from NC. Well they started without the e but later on it becomes Piercey that is my maiden name. I have information on your James Piercy married to Elizabeth Snesler. On my side is Wiley Piercey born about 1770 NC married Mary Barnes. Now I found several Piercys in Wayne Co. KY. 1830 census Wayne Co. Ky. James Piercy, William Piercy,Nathan Piercy. 1820 census Wayne Co. Ky. Wiley Piercy and William Piercy. Then a lady doing some research we don't know who she said was a cousin had this information.

Below is from Wayne Co. Ky histories-- James Percy (Pearcy) born Buckinham Co. Va. 1762 moved to Bedford Co. Va until (father and mother moved) lived there until 50 years old, then to Franklin Co. Va for 7 years and then to Wayne Co. Ky. (can't make all of it out there is a sentence here can't read) Elizabeth Betsy Piercey, widow of soldier made pension application in Wayne Co. 27 Nov. 1843, they married 1 May 1783 in Bedford Co. VA. He died 23 June 1843 in Wayne Co. She was Betsy Snesler. I always wondered if this William, Nathan and James were related to my Wiley Piercey. My Wiley Piercey was in Russell Co. Ky in the 1830 census but they were born about the same time and my Wiley Piercey died Sept. 1843. I also have a printout of James Piercey and Elizabeth Snesler can look for it if you would like. The information that I have said that my Wiley Piercey came from NC he could of come from VA I have not looked there for him. Anonymous Date: 07/25/00 02:13:57 AM From: “_____” <. > To: CC: Subject: Piercy's Hi, It's me again. Father and mother moved to Bedford Co. James lived there until aged 50 then moved to Franklin Co. Va for 7 years and then to Wayne Co. Ky. Arrived in March 1817.
