Ole Mathias Pedersen (1822-1914) of Klungland, was a baker in Farsund, Norway. After the death of his wife in 1865, he raised his children by himself and never remarried. Five of his children migrated to the United States. Theodore, Peder, Otto, and Lena lived in Chicago, Illinois. Salmine lived in Manhattan and then moved to New Jersey. (b. November 14, 1822; most likely Log farm, Herad parish, Farsund, Vest-Agder, Norway - d. August 24, 1914; Klungeland farm, Vanse parish, Farsund, Vest-Agder, Norway)

Parents: Peder Andreas Hansen (1790-1849) of Log and Maren Sophia Olsdatter (1791-1868) of Gullestad.

Birth: Ole was born on November 14, 1822. He may have been born on Log farm before it was sold by his parents.

Baptism: He was baptized at Herad parish in Farsund on November 17, 1822.

Siblings: Ole had the following siblings: Hans Pedersen (1814-1896) who married Anne Marie Berntsdatter (1827-1884); Anna Pedersdatter (1816-1831); Olene Andrea Pedersdatter (1819-1912) who married Willum Andreas Larsen (1816-1896) aka Wilhelm Andreas Larsen, and had one of her children emigrate to the United States; Helene Elisabeth Pedersdatter (1825-?); Peder Andreas Pedersen (1831-?) who worked as a baker and married Serene Larsen (1840-1905) and had one of their children emigrate to the United States; and Hans Elias Pedersen (1837-?).

Marriage: Ole married Thea Johanne Torstensdatter of Vetteland (1825-1865) on October 8, 1848 in Farsund.

Children: They had the following children: Peder Matthias Olsen (1849-1896) who migrated to Chicago, Illinois and married Anne Marie Jensen (1854-1896) and he died a year after he was assaulted, during the 1896 Eastern North America heat wave that killed 1,500 people; Sophia Marie Olsdatter (1852-1924) who stayed in Norway and married Sigvardt Nilsen (1852-1906); Theodore Johan Olsen (1852-1896) who migrated to Chicago, Illinois and worked as a sailor and was killed when he was hit by a train; Josette Teresia Olsdatter (1855-?) who stayed in Norway; Otto Olson (1858-1921) who migrated to Chicago, Illinois where he worked as a barber and he married Hannah Hansen (1864-1936); Lena Olson (1860-1938) who was born under the name Hannah Lina Olsdatter, who migrated to Chicago, Illinois and married Andrew Havig Jensen (1860-1930); Salmine Sophia Severine Pedersen (1862-1914) who married John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) in Oslo and migrated to Manhattan in New York City and then moved to Jersey City, New Jersey and then moved to the Isle of Pines in Cuba and then died while visiting her family in Farsund, Norway; and Adolph Martin Ludvig Olsen (1865) who died in childbirth when his mother died.

Widower: After the death of Thea, from complications in childbirth, Ole raised his children by himself, he never remarried. Salmine was the last born alive, that lived to an adult, and she was just three years old when her mother died.

Baker: In the 1865 Norway census, Ole was living at his bakery at 39 and 40 Kirkegarden Street and his wife had died before the census was taken. He had a servant: Ane Lisabet Abramsdatter, aka Anne Elisabeth Abramsdatter. His bother, Peder Pedersen, also a baker, was living at 36 Kirkegarden Street.

Salmine: Ole and his daughter, Salmine, appeared to be traveling outside of Sweden on September 4, 1884. Salmine was listed as "Salmine Wemmeland", perhaps a phonetic interpretation of her married name "Winblad".

Annus horribilis I: In 1896 two of his sons, and his daughter-in-law died. Peder Matthias Olsen (1849-1896) was assaulted in Chicago in 1895 he was incapacitated for a year and died on August 11, 1896 of heat stroke during the 1896 Eastern North America heat wave. His wife, Anne Marie Jensen (1854-1896) died of cancer 3 months after his death. His now orphaned children were then raised by his brother, Theodore Johan Olsen (1850-1896). Theodore died just 2 months and 15 days later when he was hit by a train.

Retirement: In the 1900 Norway census, Ole was living with his nephew: Bernt Andreas Hansen (1855-1915) on Klungeland farm in Vanse parish, Vest-Agder, Norway. In 1910 his daughter Sophia is staying with him, she had come down from Alesund. She had been a widow since 1905. They were living at Brogate 10 in Farsund.

Death: Ole died on August 24, 1914 and his children: Salmine and Lena, visited him when he was dying, or came to the funeral from America. On this trip both Salmine and her husband died and they were buried in Norway. His death was listed in the church book as: "Died 24/8 buried 28/8 1914 baker Ole Mathias Pedersen Klungeland, a widower, born 1818 [sic], Log i Herad, died of old age." He was 92 years old.

Funeral notice: In Norwegian "† Vor kjaere Far, Svigerfar, Bedstefar og Olderfar. Ole Pedersen Klungland døde idag i troen paa sin Frelser 96 [sic] aar gammel. Velsignet vaere hans minde. Afdødes efterladte. Farsund 24. August 1914, Begravelsen foregaar fredag Kl. 2 eftermiddag." Translated into English: "† ... dear father, father in law, grandfather and great grandfather. Ole Pedersen Klungland died today with faith in his Savior 96 [sic] years old. Blessed be his soul. ... Farsund 24 August 1914, funeral will take place Friday 2:00 in the afternoon." Note: He was 91 years old.

Burial: Ole was buried in Vanse Church Cemetery on August 28, 1914. His tombstone is no longer extant and the grave was recycled.

Annus horribilis II: Ole Pedersen died on August 24, 1914. John Winblad died on September 24, 1914 in Klungeland. He was married to Ole's daughter Salmine. This was 31 days after Ole's death. Lena Olson, Ole's daughter, returned to the United States from Norway on September 30, 1914. Salmine died on December 18, 1914, just 15 weeks after her father died. Otto Winblad, now parentless returned to the United States on July 6, 1915 from Norway. On that same day, Otto's brother, Anton, and Anton's wife, Eva, returned from Cuba to meet Otto in New York.

Relatives who migrated: Ole had a nephew, via his sister, Olene Pedersdatter: Jakob Elias Willumsen I (1853-1928) aka Jakob Villumsen, who emigrated to Kittson County, Minnesota, and left several children in the United States before he moved back to Norway and had more children with a second wife. Ole had a niece via his brother Peder Andreas Pedersen: Inga Pedersen (1885-1927), who emigrated to Jersey City, New Jersey and married Emil Schneider (1884-1955).

Relationships: Ole Mathias Pedersen (1822-1914) was the second, great-grandfather of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) and Sue Ann Higginbotham (1950- ) .
