NEWCASTLE CHRONICLE Wednesday 22 May 1867 Page3
TUESDAY, MAY 21, 1867. Before H. Scott, Esq., P.M., and J. Hannell, Esq., J.P. Being of Unsound Mind. John Pellow, carpenter, was brought before the court, in custody, a complaint having been laid against him by his wife, to the effect, that he was of unsound mind and unfit to be at large. Elizabeth Pellow said she was the wife of the man before the court. She had been married eighteen years. For the last ten years he had been growing weaker in the head. Witness had heard that he received a wound in the head before he was married to her, and she thought that had something to do with his present condition. He had suffered much from nervous irritation— at times he was very irritable. Latterly he had been worse. He was quiet sometimes for a week or ten days, and then he would become very violent in his manner. On Friday last he was suffering from great irritation, and he took a razor in his hand and threatened to cut his throat with it. Every summer her husband appeared to have gone weaker. She thought he would get better if he were put in the Hospital. Mr. Hannell said he would be put in a place where he would get better treatment than in the Hospital, where they had not got the facilities to attend to cases of this sort. Dr. J. De Kempf, on oath, stated that, on Saturday last, he examined the man before the Court, and also again that (Tuesday) morning. He found that he was suffering from chronic spasms, which led to fits of melancholy, and induced a desire to commit suicide. He considered that he was a dangerous lunatic, and not fit to be at large. He was dangerous to himself and to others as well. Pellow here said that he hoped the Bench would send him to the Hospital for medical treatment. The offence he had committed was very trifling, and he thought he should soon get better if under medical treatment. The Bench told the unfortunate man that that was just what they were about to do. He was not before the Court on any charge. Dr. Schrader said he had examined Pellow, and he believed from the state he was in, and the evidence given by his wife, that he was a dangerous lunatic, and not fit to be at large. At this stage of the proceedings, the prisoner sat down in the box, and began to cry bitterly. He also appeared to be violently agitated. The Bench ordered the prisoner to be removed to Maitland gaol, there to await the pleasure of His Excellency the Governor. Their Worships also intimated that he would be removed from the hospital in Maitland gaol, to the Asylum in Sydney.
