In the 1851 England census, James was living with his parents and siblings in Windle, Lancashire. His father was a coal miner.^[2]

As of the 1861 England census, James was living with his parents and sister in Prescot, Lancashire, and was working as a glass cutter. His name was spelled as Pinnington.^[3]

As of the 1871 England census, James was just living with his mother, a widow, and his sister in Widnes, Lancashire. He was still working as a glass cutter.^[4]

In the 1881 England census, James was married to Ann Pennington (born 1849 in Liverpool) and they were living in Eccleston. James was a glass cutter.^[5]

In the 1901 England census, he was still married to Ann Pennington (born 1849 in Liverpool) and they were living in St Helen's with their niece Irene Hosker. James was a glass cutter.^[6]
