Biography

Emerline was born in 1818 in Saratoga county, New York. Her father was Jacob Perkins of Saratoga county, NY. Emerline Perkins married John Butler Read of Stillwater. They had a family of five children. She passed away in 1876 in La Salle county, Illinois. ^[1]

Her will was written on 06 Mar 1876. Letters testamentary filed in La Salle county, Illinois on 14 Sep 1876 by James W. Poundstone and J.C. Momyer confirm her date of death as 11 Sep 1876 in Farm Ridge, La Salle county, Illinois.^[2] She named her five children as heirs in her will.

In the name of God Amen, I Emaline Read, of the township of Farm Ridge & county of La Salle & state of Illinois, being of sound mind & memory, and considering the uncertainty of this life do therefore make, ordain, publish & declare this to be my last will & testament, made this the sixth day of March, in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and seventysix (1876)

That is to say

First - That all my personal property & real estate be sold within one year after my death and distribution be made as follows.

Second - That all my Doctor bills, funeral expenses, & debts be paid & suitable tombstone be placed at my grave such as my heirs may desire & select, That my daughters Mary E. Rowe & Laura Neilson each have fifty Dollars,

Third - That my daughter Ella M. Read shall have four hundred dollars,

Fourth - That my son John Byron Read shall have four hundred dollars,

Fifth - That my daughter Ida B. Read shall have nine hundred dollars,

Sixth - Should my Estate not be sufficient to give each of the above named heirs the full amount specified, then each one shall receive in proportions or ratio, [?] the several amounts herein above specified Should it exceed each to receive equal portion of the excess.

Seventh - I do hereby appoint and cause to be appointed as my executors to carry out this my last will & testament James W. Poundstone and J. C. Momyer of the township of Farm Ridge & county of La Salle & state of Illinois.

The above written instrument was subscribed by the above named Emeline Read in our presence and acknowledged by her to each of us, & she at the same time published & declared, the foregoing to be her last will & testament, & we at the testator's request & in her presence have signed our names as witnesses herein & written opposite to our names, our respective places of residence.
