Biography

Vera Mae (Perkins) Skinner was an Appalachian.
Vera Mae (Perkins) Skinner was an Ohioan.
  • Between 1882 (birth) and 17 Feb 1887 the date her mother died the family appears to have been continuously living in Saybrook, Ashtabula, OH
  • Went away to "Woodbury" May 29, 1897 came home Oct 16, 1897 - I don't know where this is or what this is - hospital?? She would have been 15 years old during this time.
  • Oct 18, 1897 Started to work as a cashier at Missers? dry goods store.
  • Nov 21, 1898 her address was 1506 E. Kalamazoo St Lansing, MI
  • November 1899 her address was in Jefferson OH
  • 1900 Census - Jefferson, Ashtabula, OH living as a servant in the Charles Ely Warner family. Charles Warner is listed as a farmer and his daughter Cornelia was a lawyer and the deputy county clerk for Ashtabula County at this time so I am thinking that she might have had some connection regarding guardianship of "Honey".
  • On marriage docs for William Stagg in 1905 she lists her name as Vera Bonneville age 19 born in Colorado and parents as Gideon Bonneville and Elvia Page (all of this is bogus information so I suspect she may have already been married to someone else at this time). She is married at the home of FW Hastings, presumably Frank W Hastings. In 1905 his address is 913 N Monroe in Bay City, MI and from 1909-1913 he was the proprietor of Wonderland Theatre. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Wonderland_Theatre
  • 1910 Census - Bay City, Bay, MI: Appears as Elvira M. Stagg age 28 and 1st marriage (M1)

  • April 30, 1913 - May 1913 - Appearing as Mrs. Vera Stagg, she performs with William Greenwald and the May Co. Vaudeville Travesty "School Days" at the annual Chamber of Commerce Hall in Cleveland, OH
  • March 14, 1914 - Photos with some theater group, possibly the May Co in Cleveland, OH - about 5 months before she married Elmer.
  • 1920 Census -Living with Elmer on Amesbury Avenue in Cleveland, OH (indexed as Gleitzmans). Her birth place and age is incorrectly listed as Michigan and birth year around 1880.
  • 1930 Census - Unknown location
  • When her brother Vern died in 1930 she is listed as his daughter and as Mrs. Mary Glietsman of New York.
  • September 1931 appears in Massillion, OH newspaper say that she was "Mrs. Vera Glietsman of New York City" and that she visited Mrs. MArie Oliver of Ertle Ave.
  • 1934 - Marriage to Calvin Skinner performed by Rev. John A Nesbitt of Catonsville Presbyterian Church in Catonsville, MD
  • Dec 19, 1938 when her brother Clyde dies she used his address of 2807 Central Ave in Cleveland as her own - may have been there visiting him? She uses name as Vera M Perkins. His cause of death was listed as undetermined natural cause.
  • 1940 Census - Baltimore, MD with Calvin. Shows same house as in 1935 3106 Howard Park Ave
  • 1942 City Directory - 3106 Howard Park Ave Baltimore, MD
  • 1950 Census - 3106 Howard Park Ave Baltimore, MD -- listed as Vera M. Skinner age 48 born in Colorado
