Maria was born about 1860, probably in Eda, Värmland. She married glass worker Olof Hansson and they had four daughters (Olga, Anna, Sophie and Gerda) and four sons (Gustav, Hans, Johan and Otto), all of whom emigrated to the United States when they became older. They lived in the Tuffle apartment building of Eda glasbruk.
