Biography

Mary Ann was born on 3 March 1820. Her parents were Joseph James Pescott and Mary. They baptised[1]her at St Mary Newington on 2 April 1820. The baptism record also gives her date of birth and gives her father's occupation which was a twine spinner. They were living at New Street Kent Road.

She married[2] William Henry Brown when she was 23, on 7 June 1843, at St Georges Camberwell. Their witnesses were J.Pescott and W. Searle.

Their children were all born in Brighton, Sussex.

Mary's husband died of TB on 30 May 1858 at 28 Apollo Terrace Brighton. Mary was 38 when he died. In the 1861 census[3] Mary was 42, a widow and working as a charwoman. She had four children: William 13, Joseph 11, Mary Ann 9, and Albert 7. She also had her niece Mary Ann Clarke living with her and her parents Joseph James and mary Pescod. Joseph was still working as a ropemaker. They were all iving at 73 Woburn Place, Brighton.

Her father Joseph died when he was 68 at 18 Claremont Row Brighton on 27 Oct 1865. She was present and registered his death. He had had pyelitis for some years.

In 1875 Mary went on her own to visit Canada to see her son and his family who had emmigrated sometime between 1871 and 1874. On 23 August 1875 Mary left written instructions[4] for her family regarding her belongings which she was leaving behind. Her instructions indicate that she was intending to return to England in the future.

I Mary Ann Brown who is about leaving England for Canada wishes to leave in care of my mother Mary Pescodd any furniture and effects and everything belonging to me that I leave behind me in England and at her decease to be left in the care of my niece Mary Ann Plank until I return back to England. Witness my hand this 23rd day of August one thousand eight hundred and seventy five. Witnessed by William OwenWillson and George Anderson.

When she left England she was 55 years old. Unfortunately she died in Ontario, Canada on the 25 June 1880.
