Sarah Melissa is the author of a letter to her sister Chloe quoted in the text of J4755 Chloe Pettibone above. In the same letter she reveals strong opinions about the state of the nation:
May 1, 1834 . . . It is a general time of health in this Region but an uncommon Cold and Backward Season the Trees have not put forth nor vegetation started this looks rather Gloomy. but not more so than the Moral State of our Nation when we look at what opre[ssion] and fraud is now sufferd to be practesd on the Cherokees Shall we not expect judgements Let us Not forget that all Israel sufferd famine three years for slaying the Gibeonites & the wrath of God was not turned away until Saul’s bloody host Was Slain the gibeonites obtained their treaty by fraud yet God would not suffer his people to violate it. . . Two and a half more pages follow in somewhat the same vein, covering abolition, the need to resist temptation, and moral reform in general (she was strongly in favor of all three). At one point she wrote; . . . We have to speak of judgement and Mercy I feel that it is a time when Christians should be Awake and Wholly Dedicated to God, but I find myself to Cold to stupid i am like one that Scripture Speaks of that Awaketh but my heart Sleepeth Sister Pray for me. . .
In the last paragraph, Sarah Melissa finally turns to news of her family and sends greetings to Chloe's family, and signs herself
