"Joseph Pettit was born on the 26th September, 1887 in Sydney to John Appsley Pettit and Ellen Collis. There were 8 children of the marriage, his siblings were Pearl, Arthur, Daisy, Violet, Alice, Robert and James.
Joseph became a fell monger (a dealer in skins and hides) in the Botany area of Sydney. On 28th April 1909 he married Isobella Shurey. Together they had 7 children. They were Alice, Elsie, William, Alma, Thelma, Thomas and Frederick who died at one year of age.
As with most people at that time, there was never enough money. The plague was rife in Sydney during the early 20's and in 1922 Isobella came down with this terrible disease and after fighting for 12 days she died in the coast hospital at Little Bay.
Joseph then had the help of his mother and father to help with the raising of the children. Much of the responsibility for the washing and ironing fell on the shoulders of the eldest child Alice.
Joseph had a nasty fall at work which left him with a limp. He was a very good father to his children. He died in Sydney on 23rd March 1944 aged 57."[1]
