Robert Pharazyn (1833 – 19 July 1896) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in New Zealand representing both Rangitikei and Wellington. He was also Mayor of Wanganui in 1874.
Robert was born on 31 August 1833 at London, England[1] and baptised on 6 Oct 1833 at St Pancras, Euston Road, Saint Pancras, London. He was the son of Charles Johnson Pharazyn and Mary Catherine Buckland.
He emigrated to New Zealand with his parents[2] on the Jane, which left London on 24 November 1840 arriving at Wellington on 24 May 1841[3].
He was educated at St. John's College, Auckland[2]. In the 1850s he was a successful sheep farmer for several years, farming on a portion of the Te Aute Block in Hawke's Bay.
He married Emily Whitbread Lomax, a widow with four children, on 29 March 1871[4] at St Paul's Cathedral, Wellington[2]. They had no children.
Robert represented Rangitikei in Parliament during William Fox's absence abroad from 1865 to 1866 and Wellington City from 1865 until 1876[2]. He acted as Provincial Secretary for a short period in 1875 to 76.
Robert became the third Mayor of the Borough of Wanganui, serving from March 1874 to September 1874[5]. He was was also chairman of the hospital board and of the Wanganui-Castlecliff Railway Company[2].
In 1875 he was elected to the Wellington City Council[2]. On 15 May 1885 he became a member of the Legislative Council after his father retired. He took a prominent part in debates and committee work. In 1894 he was a member of the Council's Banking Committee and, for many years, was chairman of the Joint Committee on the Parliamentary Library. He was still serving when he died.
Robert died on 19 July 1896[6]at The Lawn, Hobson Street, Wellington[7]. His funeral was held on 21 July[8], attended by many people including the Premier and other members of both chambers in Parliament. He was buried in Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington, Plot C of E 3206[9].
His probate was granted on 24 July 1896 at Wellington[10]. In his extremely lengthy will from 1892, he left his wife the sum of £1000 immediately, all his chattels, and the income from his estate for life. He made bequests of £1000 to his step-daughters and left his step-son and nephew property. He made other gifts and annuities.
