Rodney was born in 1942 in New Zealand. He may have been the son of Thomas Herbert Phillips and Mary Joyce Dixon. [1]
He was a chess prodigy and won the 1957 New Zealand Championship at the age of 14, the youngest player ever to do so.
He was coached by Ortvin Sarapu and competed in the 1959 and 1961 World Junior Championship, coming 13th in the latter.
He was found drowned in Wellington Harbour on 19 September 1969, a suspected suicide
