Biography

Stephen Phillips, brother of Lydia Phillips who m John Ryder, was born about 1747 in Harwich. Stephen was son of Oker (Oaker) Phillips Phillips-8582 & Mary Small. Stephen was married in Chatham by Rev. Emery to Desire Ryder of Chatham. Stephen then deserted Desire and lived unmarried with Elizabeth Ellis, Widow of Thomas Ellis and daughter of Jonathan & Elizabeth (Smith) Chase and had further children. He passed away about 1829.

This is a massive ledge compiled by Josiah Paine from 1845 & then his son John H Paine until 1920 or so. Interviewing the town of Harwich's oldest residents, etc. It is described as Massive handwritten with many insertions and notes.

Stephen, s. of Oker & Mary , m. Desire Ryder of Chatham Jan 14 1768. He deserted her & took Elizabeth Ellis (of Thomas Ellis) widow, as his housekeeper, by whom he had children. He was a man small in stature, fond of his gun & always in poor circumstances; latter years of his life lived near where Stephen, his son dwelt, upon the place formerly occupied by John Broadbrooks. The old people relate that at his birth he was so small that he was placed in a tankard. He died in 1829. He was the father of several children by his lawful wife. He lived a while north of Phillip Ellis on the old road to Brewster, his dau. Jane was there born in 1786. He was supported by the town and died after May 27,1827, with Eliz Ellis.} His children were as follows, though we are not sure as to their order or nativity, but give them as reported. The last were by Elizabeth Ellis: 49 I Samuel Oker. 50 II Rachel "May 21,1774" mar William Long and mard[?] of Nathan Long & others 51 III Tamsin mar 52 IV Mary (Mercy) mar Stephen Eldredge (N.B. d. 1864 ae 93 53 V Elizabeth mar Nat. Rider of C. Dec 22,1796 54 VI Stephen 1781 . 55 VII Experience# {# She was shot in her thigh by Silvanus Cahoon Dec 2,1799. and died after lingering till April 4,1800. The shot took effect in her thigh and which was so perforated with shots that amputation was necessary. Gradually failing under the treatment of kind friends she died as above stated. At the time of shooting she was at Mr. David Clarks the Jonholder[?, difficult to read] Cahoon was arraigned before Justice Brooks and discharged.} {Doc. James Thacher amputated her leg and Cth[?, can't read] Paine held her leg. Doct. John Young of Wellfleet attended her.} Died April 4, 1800, from the effects of amputation of her leg, age 15 yrs 56 VIII Jane Aug.1786 mar. Joseph Baker July 5,1808.
