follows in a book called "Siftings from Putnam Co TN" by Mary Hopson: "Jesse Phillips was in some part of North Carolina before Tennessee became a state. He moved to what is now Putnam County in 1831 and entered a grant of land for one cent. It being close to the Smith's Chapel Cemetery. He could neither read nor write. Within the few years following, he sold in 1836, 65 acres to John Burris, in 1852, 365 acres to Martin Sims.
