John was an apprentice carpenter in England, who was first convicted from running away from his master, John Griffith. Then he was indicted on March 14, 1832, for stealing a carpentry plane worth 2 shillings. As it was his second offence, at the age of 22, he was transported for a term of seven years to Van Diemen's Land, or Tasmania, on the ship the Surrey, arriving on the 9th of March 1832, after a four-month long voyage. He married when he had served his term, in Hobart on 13 April 1844 to Ann Watchorn.[1][2] They had two children together, Matthew and Emily, and later immigrated to New Zealand.
He died in 1881 in Wellington, New Zealand, aged 73 years.[3]
