Carrie was born in 1871. She is the daughter of George Pierce and Emma Boardman.
The following comes from the Clinton County, NY, Historical Association Facebook Page:
MORRISONVILLE – “Miss Caroline Louise Pierce, retired schoolteacher, who died at the Champlain Valley Hospital on Sept. 4. 1949, after a short illness, was a resident of Morrisonville. She was born in the Town of Schuyler Falls, near that village, on Nov. 1, 1871, the daughter of George and Emma (Boardman) Pierce. She was of Revolutionary ancestry (Zebulon Mead), (Henry Cary), (Moses Bordman) and her family was among the early pioneer settlers of Clinton County.
Miss Pierce attended the local schools and was graduated from Plattsburgh Normal School in 1895. She began her teaching career in the schools of Cambridge and Fort Edward, returning to Morrisonville, where she taught in the grade school with great success. She was instrumental in obtaining a high school for Morrisonville and was its principal for many years.
From Morrisonville she went to Newark Valley, NY, where she taught the teachers' training class until her retirement in 1929. After her retirement, she returned to her home in Morrisonville, where she took an active part in the affairs of the community, spending the remainder of her life in the service of her friends and neighbors.
Miss Pierce was a member of the Baptist Church of Morrisonville, the Clinton County W.C.T.U., and Saranac Chapter, D.A.R., of Plattsburgh. She is survived by one brother, Myron Pierce, of Schenectady, and two nieces, Mrs Marjorie P. Dilley, and Mrs. Bernice P. Cauffman of Syracuse.”
The image is from our Bigelow Studio photograph collection. It was donated to us in 1960 by Miss Mary Wells of Morrisonville, who died in 1968 at the age of 92. She and Caroline were friends and are both buried in the Union Cemetery there. We have several items attributed to Caroline including a transcript of an address she gave to the Saranac Chapter of the D. A. R. about the Presbyterian Church in Chazy donated by Emily McMasters. Mary Wells was a prolific donator to our museum – over 350 items between 1948 and the time of her death.
