Biography

1861 census - living with parents at the Sporstmans Arms in Barham

between 1861 and 1871, apparently lived in Barham, Starre, and Margate

1871 census - living with parents on King Street in Margate

1881 census - Coachman in Folkestone, living next door to his great uncle Elgar Pilcher

In 1882 he married Elizabeth Sarah Mann, from New Romney, working as a servant in Folkestone.

1891 census - Riding Instructor in Folkestone

1901, 1911 census, plus son Alfred's marriage certificate in 1923-Private Coachman (for Lady Sturt) living in 1-3 The Bayle, Folkestone

Thomas was often away from home for extended periods of time as Lady Sturt had a number of houses, and often made extended visits to friends and relations.

According to an interview in 1933, in the late 1870s he "tootled the coach horn" for a coach and four that his father drove between Margate and Canterbury. He subsequently was employed by livery stables in Folkestone in various capacities. He rode in the Wye steeplechase for three years in succession, winning one year on a horse called Invicta. He was the guard on the four-horse stage coach, driven by Mr. J.P. Scott , running between Folkestone and Canterbury, playing the "yard of tin" (coaching horn) to announce their arrival.[1]

They had 13 children, of whom 10 were still alive in 1911 (1911 census). I have names and birth details (primarily from the census) for 12 of them, including two who died young.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
