La Verne Matthew Pings was born 1923 in Sauk County to Frank and Viola (Neis) Pings.
After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. He had wide-ranging interests and, after 2 years in the CCC, went on to nursing school at the University of Chicago, graduating with a bachelor of philosophy in 1946. He followed with a bachelor's degree in zoology at the University of Wisconsin in 1947; a master's degree in health education in 1952 from Columbia University; a library science degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1955; and his doctorate in education from the University of Wisconsin in 1958.
He worked with Palestinian refugees from 1949-1954. After various librarian positions, he stayed at Wayne State University in Detroit for twenty-five years, first as assistant medical professor and librarian and later as Director of Libraries. He was active in regional and national library associations, wrote numerous articles & books on medical librarianship, and continued as an educator at the university level. [1]
After retiring in 1986, he moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He provided an oral history interview in 2001. [2]
He died November 3, 2008 at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, NC.[3]
