John was an illegitimate son of King John. The name of his mother is not known, nor is his birthplace.[1][2]
According to a 1965 article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, he became a cleric who had the support of the custodians of the see of Lincoln in 1201.[3]
John is referred as a son of King John in a charter dated 19 June 1214,[2] so he was alive then.
Charles Cawley's 'Medieval Lands'[2] and Allison Weir's Britain's Royal Families suggests he died in 1242. Alison Weir adds that he may have been a knight.[4]
