Aline, known to family and friends as Bebe, served in the Navy during World War II when she was in the WAVES. Her job was to train Navy pilots on the Link Celestial Navigator. She was named for her father, Al Plowman, but her older sister was not able to pronounce Aline and instead called her "baby" which she mispronounced "Bebe" and the nickname stuck! Bebe was generally the life of the party with her love of conversation. Thanks to her service in the military Bebe got the advantage of the G. I. Bill and was able to attend Washington University in St. Louis, from which she graduated in 1947 with a degree in English.
