Nicholas was born in 1833. He passed away in 1902.
Nicholas Polan married Martha Jane Dickover on February 14, 1857, in Delaware County, Indiana. The young couple lost an 8 month old daughter, Paulina, on April 7, 1858. The 1860 census shows them living in Delaware Township, Delaware County. Nicholas, listed as 'N', a 27 year old carpenter, wife Martha J., aged 20, with their one year old son, John S., as well as an 18 year old laborer, Alexandrien H. Anderson. In June of 1863, Nicholas registered for the draft although it does not appear that he ever served in the Civil War. . By the census of 1870, Nicholas and Martha (listed as 'Poland') had added William W, aged 9, Ulysses G(rant), aged 5, Mary H., aged 1, and three month old Albert (born February, 1870). Young John is no where to be found. Martha passed away on February 24, 1875. On December 8 of that year, Nicholas married Rachel Mansfield in Delaware County. Rachel as the widow of Rhodes Stradling and John R. Mansfield. In 1880, Nicholas, 44 year old Rachel, and children John Samuel, Willard, (Ulysses) Grant, Albert, Mary, and younger children Carrie, aged 8 and Martha, aged 5 are living in Hamilton Township, Delaware County. In 1900, Nicholas (Nickolas), now a farmer, and Rachel were living in Hamilton Township with daughter Martha Jacobs, her 33 year old husband Elwood, and a servant, Sarah Jacobs who appears to be Elwood's sister.
