John was born in 1758, the son of Arthur Pomeroy, 1st Viscount Harberton and Mary Colley (1723-1794).
He was educated by Dr Benson and entered at Trinity College, Dublin on 6 March 1775, aged 15, from where he graduated B.A. 1778 and MA in 1783. [1]
He was admitted Prebendary of Yagoe (St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin) on 12 September 1783 (FF.) and installed on 1 May 1784. In 1787 he was made Treasurer of Christ Church. He was presented as Treasurer on 3 March 1787 and admitted and installed on 11 March. He resigned on the 22nd of November following; and in the next year became rector of Urney in the diocese of Derry. He was installed as Prebendary of Monmohenock (St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin) on 18 June 1794. In the year 1817 he was elected Dean of St. Patrick's; but on an appeal to the Court of Delegates his election was set aside as invalid. He resigned his prebend in 1822.
John married Esther Spencer, daughter of James Spencer, on 31 Oct 1785.
Children
After the death of his father-in-law, James Spencer, he made Rathangan House his principal residence, as did his son, the 5th Viscount, until he sold the lease of the property to the Duke of Leinster in 1858.
He died in 1833.
