Biography

Major General William Henry Evered Poole was a South African soldier before and during World War II and afterwards became a diplomat.
In 1927, he married Elsie Irene van Boeschoten and had one daughter. After the dissolution of the marriage in 1951, he married Maureen Naish-Gray on 22 October 1951. He was at that time 1951 the South African Ambassador to Italy with the title of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary.
In 1954, General Poole was transferred as Ambassador to the Argentine and Chile, residing in Buenos Aires.
He was twice mentioned in despatches, received the Distinguished Service Order, and was appointed a Companion in The Most Honourable Order of the Bath and a Commander in the Order of the British Empire. He was among the very few South Africans to become a Commander of the US Legion of Merit, and was also a Commander of the French Légion d'honneur and received the Croix de Guerre avec Palme.
