Biography

William H Portwood's marriage to Hammersley was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1927 in the Islington district.[1]

William Henry Portwood (age 25), Bachelor, Assistant Commercial Secretayr, of 36 Albany Cottages, son of William James Portwood, Seaman, married Mary Hammersley (age 31), Spinster, of SS (or 55) Francis House Woolwich, daughter of Robert Hammersley, China MFG, on 4 May 1927 in St James the Apostle, Islington, Islington, England.[2]

William Henry Portwood's death was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1981 in the BARNSTAPLE district.[3]

Research Notes

There is no birth of a William Portwood registered anywhere in England and Wales in the appropriate timescale.

Eliza Portwood, his purported mother, appears in the 1911 living with her mother Eliza Mitchell. It states that Eliza Portwood has been married for 27 years, and has 1 child (presumably Catherine).[4]
