Biography

Captain Israel born 1763 fought in the America Revolutionary War in 1780 for a Massachusetts militia company in Shewsbury, MA. against the British and King George III. After settling in Clements, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada, he fought as Captain of Nova Scotia Militia in the War of 1812 for King George III and IV. With Potter luck, he was on the winning side both times! He is buried at Goat Island Baptist Church, Clements, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada which is the oldest Baptist Church building in Canada. He helped build the church and was its fourth pastor. Please note that this church is not on Goat Island, a nearby island in the Annapolis basin. "Israel Potter born in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Mass., July 1763; in 1780 he joined a company of six-months’ men in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, to reinforce the Continental Army. And marched from Springfield with Lieut. Taylor of the 2d Mass. Regt., July 6. After the war he went to Nova Scotia, and settled on his father’s estate, called Potter’s Point, in Clements, where he carried on farming and fishing. He was captain of militia in the war of 1812, and served through the last of the reign of George III, into the reign of George IV. He m. Mary, daughter of Capt. John Rice (see Rice), Jan. 7 1786, they lived together over 61 years. I do not know what year he was converted and joined the Baptist church, but he wrote a letter to Dr T. Baldwin (1753-1836) of Boston, in 1810 telling of a “powerful reformation” in Clements, when about 200 were converted to the Lord; and the glorious work spread away “up the river” to Bridgetown and elsewhere. He was called to preach about this time, and was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1822, and continued a faithful life of Jesus Christ to the end. He died Aug, 17, 1847. She died March 7, 1849, aged 81." By Tim Potter, Potter-1890.
