On May 17, 1855 Jean Bertrand went to the St. Landry Court House and became a U.S. citizen.[16] Jean Bertrand and his family were recorded in the 1850[3], 1860[4], and 1870[8] censuses in Ward Five, St. Landry Parish. In 1880 he moved to what would eventually be Lacassine, LA, becoming one of the first families to settle there.[13] He passed away on 19 March, 1881 and is buried at the Lacassine Cemetery.[17]
