Research Notes

How is James Riley Powell (abt.1817-abt.1890) related? A popular theory attributes James Riley Powell as a son of Abraham W. Powell with his unknown first wife. There was a deed between them, and they followed a similar migration pattern. Additionally, DNA suggests they were related, but not father and son. Y-DNA for at least two descendants of James Riley Powell is not Y-DNA matching Abraham W. (Hopper) Powell nor Abraham Lovely Powell of KY. Their Y-DNA connection may instead be associated with Cantrell. However, atDNA suggests there is a maternal connection to Powells.

Note about Sarah Sally Allen and Abraham Lovely Powell. There is a lot of conflation, confusion, and mixed theories involving Sarah Allen, Abraham Lovely Powell, and Abraham W. (Hopper) Powell. I'm simply providing information here for consideration. Raffety-49 04:15, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Reportedly Sarah Sally Allen (1795-1870) married Abraham Lovely Powell (1790-1874). They have what appears to be a memorial marker placed for them in Powell Cemetery in Jackson County, Kentucky. The design and features of the grave marker give the impression it was placed more recently, perhaps by descendants? FamilySearch Person: LZ65-BQR see Collaborate tab.
  • Some theorize Sarah Allen was the 1st wife of Abraham W. (Hopper) Powell.
  • Others have pointed out that Sarah Allen-Powell predeceased her father, William Allen (d:1835). FamilySearch Person: LH86-H1L see Collaborate tab. Notes as follows:

In part states "Word-of-mouth accounts indicate that Abraham Powell moved to Georgia from an unknown location prior to the Civil War and that he met his wife Sarah during that move. Sarah is said to be the daughter of a Cherokee Indian Chief, who met Abraham as he passed through Tennessee on his missionary work."
