Biography

Jacob was born in 1771. He passed away in 1849. He was born on Long Island, probably in the Jericho Monthly Meeting of the Friends or Quakers, also married in that area, then they moved north to Coeymans Monthly Meeting, by then it was in Greene County, NY. Quaker births could be found in records in many monthly meetings if they moved from place to place, as Jacob and family did, so his birth or age could be seen in Jericho, Coeymans and Scipio if recorded there, especially before the major schism of 1828...

Sources

Summary of his Quaker Records: Jacob Powell, son of Samuel and Mary Powell of Oyster Bay, NY, meeting, married 1-22-1794 at Bethpage, NY, to Hannah Pearsall, daughter of John and Mary Pearsall of Huntington, NY. They had children named: Israel, Samuel, Abigail, John. Jacob and family got certificate for removing to NY monthly meeting, 3-21-1805, from Jericho monthly meeting, NY. From NYMM, they got certificate to remove to Coeymans MM 4-21-1806 with their 4 children. In 3-24-1819 they removed on to Scipio MM and lived in the Sempronius meeting, listed in the Locke/Summer Hill 1820 Census. Still there in 1828, they are on the Sempronius member list of the Great Schism of 1828 and later disowned and lived near the Lickville Free Will Baptist Church, in Summer Hill, Cayuga, NY. Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 3, pp. 258, 293-294. Also the Coeymans and Scipio MM records and the US Censuses 1800-1850. - Loren Fay.

Anyone who says Coeymans Monthly Meeting has to be in Albany County, is thinking pre-1800, when the meeting was named it was in Albany County, but Greene County was formed in 1800, and it was ever after that in Greene County, especially in the town of New Baltimore, where the meetinghouse was located and where the cemeteries still are located... Coeymans meeting began under Hudson MM in 1789, and they bought land and began building a meeting house in 5th month 1795 on Stanton Hill, where the old meetinghouse also had a plain cemetery around the meetinghouse with mostly plain grave stones, meaning they had no or minimal inscriptions, as per old Quaker tradition. The land and cemetery are still there at the oldest place marked by tall trees. Coeymans Monthly Meeting was organized from Hudson MM in 12th month 1799, which is when those monthly meeting records begin, but earlier member births may be seen in records written down later, but not always... After the schism of 1828 there were two Coeymans MM's with meetinghouses and records, as Orthodox or Hicksites. As some decreased in members and support they were later laid down and eventually the records were gathered to the Friends' archives in NY City, and in the later 1900s, were moved to a better Friends' archive in Pennsylvania, but are accessible online and well indexed with the James Hazard Index to NY Yearly Meeting. In the 1950s, most of the remaining Friends meetings in NYYM reunited together. (Notes from reading the old original Coeymans PM and MM records on microfilm at the NY State Library in Albany, NY, in October 2023 by Loren Fay.)

His birth is recorded in Coeymans Monthly Meeting records, of the Society of Friends or Quakers, and I found it easily by searching in the James Hazard Index to the NY Yearly Meeting records... Its all online and free to use. Friends' birth records are mostly recorded without a specific birth place, but in the Monthly Meeting records, so I often use that meeting as the birthplace, showing where it was recorded. The same or similar information might be seen in two or three Monthly Meeting records when they moved to a newer location during their life.

In 1828, Jacob Powell and family listed in the Sempronius Meeting of Friends (Quakers) Jacob Powell, Hannah, Mary, minors: Elizabeth 15, Henry 19, Jacob 17, William 12. They removed 1819 from Coeymans Monthly Meeting to the Scipio Monthly Meeting, and were local members of the Sempronius Meeting which was located in Moravia since the town changed in 1833.
