Capt. Ralph Hamor mentions in his account that Powhatan's father ( Wahunsenacawh) was believed to have been from the West Indies.

"Thirdly, they [the Chicohominies, "who have long time lived free from Powhatans subjection..."] should at all times be ready and willing to furnish us [English settlers in Virginia] with three or four hundred bowmen to aide us against the Spaniards, whose name is odious amongst them, for Powhatans father was driven by them from the west-Indies into those parts..."
