Rev. John Prentice was married first to Mary Gardner, the widow of Rev. Andrew Gardner, married on 4 Deceember 1705. Rev. Gardner was Rev. Prentice's predecessor in the ministry in Lancaster, Massachusetts. She was Rev. Prentice's first wife. [2]

Rev. John Prentice of Lancaster, Massachusetts and the widow, Mrs. Prudence Swan of Charlestown, Massachusettswere married by Rev. Jos. Stevens on 11 November 1718 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. [4]

Probate
The will of John Prentice of Lancaster was dated 28 December 1747 and proved on 8 February 1747/48 in Worcester. He mentioned his wife Prudence, his children, Thomas Prentice, Stanton Prentice, Mary Cushing (eldest daughter), Elizabeth Robbins, Sarah Smith, Dorothy Stearns, Prudence Brown, Relief Prentice, and Rebecca Prentice, and his grandchildren, John Prentice, Samuel Prentice, and Anna Prentice (sister to John and Samuel). He appointed Josiah White and Hooker Osgood to be the executors.[6]
His inventory was taken on 4 May 1748 in Lancaster.[7]
In 1748, the estate that had been his first wife was settled upon Thomas Prentice, the heirs of John Prentice, decd., Dr. Stanton Prentice, Mary Cushing, wife to Job Cushing, Elizabeth Robbins, wife of Daniel Robbins, Sarah Smith, wife of Dr. Joshua Smith, and Dorothy Stearns, wife of Josiah Stearns.[8]
In 1748, his estate was divided and set out to Relief Prentice, Rebecca Prentice, Elizabeth Robbins, Sarah Smith, Dorothy Sterns, and Prudence Brown.[9]
In 1749, an account of his estate by his widow, Prudence was recorded which included debts received, improvement of the real estate, debts paid, gravestones, appraisers, dividing real estate, and administration fees.[10]
