Biography
Judith was born 27, 28 or 29 May 1881 as 7th child of Irish born William Preston and SA Susanna Catharina Magdalena Reyneke.
(She was the daughter of Irish born William Preston. )
She wrote her bday was on 28 May. Het baptism shows born on 29 May. As her granddaughter, I recall we had her b/day on 27 May.
In June 1902 she went to Heilbron concentration camp, seemingly together with a sister of her fiancee JG ROOS. It is a mystery how she got to Heilbron from her fiancee's father JIP ROOS's farm Fraaiuitzicht in Lindley...perhaps by foot? It is also guessed that she was looking for some kind of household stock as everything on farm was destroyed and burnt during ABW. It was 3weeks before her marraige!! Sad sad situation.
She married JOHANNES GYSBERTUS ROOS 22 July 1902, only 2 months after ABW ended.
JG ROOS was wounded at Slag van Graspan, Reitz 6 June 1901. He was also wounded in Nov 1901 at Langeberg Harrismith. These traumatic events left him with tremendous physical scars and he had to use crouches and kieries to get along most/all of his life.
They had 10 children. 5died as babies, 1 died as young woman in her early 30's. These 6 Roos decendants are all buried on the farm Brakpan Reitz. Cemetery is still existing. 4 children grew old.
Granny Maggie liked to sing Irish songs I.e Galway bay , The dying Nun, and Maggie etc. I can remember this well. She probably learned these and other Irish songs from her Irish father William Preston.
She also kept a small harp and I remember her playing on it. It might have been a belonging of her irish born Preston father.
She also told us that she had to act as a teacher as a young girl, for scholars much older than herself. It must have been after ABW.
Maggie passed away in 1966 in the house of her son in law, Nick vdMerwe and her daughter Hettie Roos vdMerwe, in Reitz. She was buried alongside her beloved Johannes Gysbertus Roos in the Reitz graveyard.

I was told that he and a certain JOHN CRAVEN ( grandfather of late doc Danie Craven) , BOTH UNDER 20J OF AGE??, Entered SA by ship and later on bofh lived in Lindley in the Freestate.
