Daniel Pretty was born August 12, 1794 in Maddington, Wiltshire, England.[1][2] He enlisted in the 76th Regiment of Foot with his first assignment in Spain. He also fought in France and was present on March 31, 1814 when they marched victoriously into Paris. He came to North America in August 1814 and fought at Lake Champlain.[2]
Daniel was discharged in 1816 and until his marriage to Margaret Wark in 1824, his whereabouts in Canada are unknown.[2] They married in Middleville, at the Presbyterian Church. For two years, they lived on a farm near Middleville and started their family. The 100 acre lot was exchanged soon after their daughter, Maria, was born. They relocated to the east half of Lot 6, Concession 6 in Darling Township, Upper Canada in 1830. He received his land patent in 1836[3] and remained on that farm for the rest of his life.[2]
The spelling of Daniel's last name appears to have been changed when he emigrated to Canada. It was originally spelled Pritty[2][4][5]
Research Notes
There is reason to believe that he was living in Lanark Township during the missing years noted in his profile, prior to his marriage. Further review of the source is underway.
Land Grant Petition, dated February 1830, states: Daniel was a discharged Private in the 76th Regiment of Foot; that his Discharge had been lost in coming to Perth, and a certificate of Lieutenant Sache was provided to confirm his Discharge.
Land Grant, dated December 1836, states: Daniel was located by the Surveyor General on the east half of Lot Six, Concession Six, in the Township of Darling under the authority of an order in Council, dated 9 Mar 1830. It further states that he completed his settlement duty on the same lot. The Grant was issued December 1836.
The identity of his parents as Thomas Pritty and Sarah Marwood are questionable, as they were born and died in Chard, Somerset, England and had no known association with Maddington, Wiltshire or the area around the Salisbury Plains. Crawford-15512 14:08, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
