DEATH OF MR THOMAS PROCTER. NORTH OTAGO TIMES, VOLUME XXXIV, ISSUE 6938, 14 JANUARY 1890, PAGE 2 DEATH OF MR THOMAS PROCTER. Mr Thomas Procter, another of the early settler of Oamaru, died yesterday morning. Mr Procter had been suffering from ill health for over a year, but it was only recently that his illness developed itself into the form of an attack of paralysis. It was hoped by Mr Procter's relatives and friends that he would overcame the attack, but this was not to be. Sir Procter had been a public man almoet from his first residence in Oamaru 25 years ago. In 1864 Mr Procter kept the Waiho Inn, nine miles north of the Waitaki, and in 1885 be came across to Oamaru, and entered into possession of the White Hart Hotel. This was Mr Procter's first start in Oamaru, and from this he worked himself up to a position of comparative opulence. He was proprietor of the Star and Garter Hotel m the good old days," and there he accumulated a considerable amount of money, which unfortunately for himself, as it turned out, he .invested ia town properties, until at one time he held, according to the then values, something like L 35.000 worth. During his lifetime Mr Procter was connected with many of our public institutions, more particularly with the Borough Council. He was three times Maror of Oaraaru, a compliment paid to his honesty of purpose, for notwithstanding his bfusqaeness of manner, Mr Procter was always fair in his method of dealing with public matters. Tn« records of the Council will show that the deceased gentleman always showed impartiality in his public actions, and if he mtde an enemy it was became the person offended did not understand a mannerism that covered a kindly disposition. In various other capacities besides those of Borough Conuetllor or Mayor Mr Procter served the town. Abuut nine years ago, after retiring from the hotel business, he entered into partnership with Mr Ste*ard in the milling and grain business, bat this was at a time when the reaction on oar balloon-like prosperity had jost set in, and the venture tamed oat anything bat a remunerative one. The consequence was that Mr Procter became responsible for an indebtedness that ended in the properties held in his own name passing away from him. He had in tflect to make a fre»h a'art in life, and before long was landlord of the Junction Hotel, but did not retain possession of that place long before the Northern Hotel was offered to him, and he became licensee of it, and until his death was its landlord Mr Procter was a Past Master of Lodge Waitaki, and for years took an active interest in Masonry, having served in various capacities in the lodge. Mr Procter's death will be a subject of much genuine regret among those who knew him, for beneath his ruggedneasof manner there was a kind heart and a thorough honestness of disposition.
