The Dandridge Family "The recent and timely account of the ancestry of Martha Dandridge Washington, which appeared in 1968, indicates that the family had been farmers for many years in the neighborhood of Oxford in the villages of Blewbury, Drayton St. Leonard, Appleford, and Dorchester-on-the-Thames in England.

Bartholomew Dandridge, who was a great-great-grandfather of Martha Washington, was born around 1580 and was engaged in the pursuit of farming in Drayton St. Leonard when he married in 1604, Agnes Wilder and they had a son, William Dandridge, who after his father's death in 1638, continued his farming and was a zealous churchman in Oxfordshire.

William Dandridge and his wife had three sons: William, Frances and John, who were educated at a grammar school in Dorchester, as were the sons of his brother, Frances Dandridge: Frances and John.

The Great Plague in 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666 shaped the destiny of the Dandridge Family. William Dandridge sent his son to London as an apprentice to Thomas Postlewaite to study painting and Frances Dandridge sent his two sons, Frances and John, to London to be apprenticed to apothecaries.

John Dandridge in time became a Master Stainer Painter and he married twice and had a total of fourteen children. The sons of his second marriage, William and John, came to Virginia, and his grandson, William Langbourn, son of William and Mary Dandridge Langbourn, and his grandson, William Dandridge, son of Bartholomew, followed in time their two uncles to Pamunkey River. The move to London had been advantageous for the family, for the various members of the family prospered in their new setting. The will of Frances Dandridge, who acquired a large estate during his lifetime, distributed it among his relatives in England and Virginia. The legacies gave security to the family of John Dandridge, the Painter, who had reached the top of his profession; some of his paintings hand in the London Galleries to this day."

Some dispute over relationships: The London baptismal records found for the children of John Dandridge Sr. say that William Dandridge the younger and his siblings Elizabeth I, Rosamond, Elizabeth II, and Bridget were all baptized at St. Andrew at Holborn in London and were the children of John Dandridge [Sr.] and his first wife Bridget [Dugdale], NOT his second wife Ann. The baptismal records for John Dandridge Jr. -- Martha's father -- and his siblings Ann, Bartholomew, Mary, Francis and Benjamin say that they were baptized at St. Dunstan in the West in London and that John Dandridge [Sr.] and his second wife Ann were his parents. Here are the links to the baptismal records for brothers William and John Jr. (Martha's father). (1) WILLIAM -- father: John Dandridge mother: Bridget birth date: 5 Oct 1683 Source: Ancestry.com.
