Abridged report "The Coroner suggested that Gary's death may have been avoided if there was a fence around the lock . Mr Shaw a neighbour ran to help the boy when his niece told him that someone had fallen in the canal. He pulled Gary out and applied artificial respiration until an ambulance arrived Gary was pronounced dead at the Crewe hospital A verdict of accidental death was recorded"
