John Prowse of Tiverton, gentleman was the son and heir of John Prowse Tiverton. During his father's lifetime he was occasionally referred to as "the younger" while his father was called "the elder." The IPM of his father taken in 1586 names his eldest son John, then aged 39 years, and sons Robert, Thomas, Richard and George. From his father he received the large Plymouth manor of Western Peverel, worth by the year, £18.7.2., with Chevythorn and Tiverton property worth a further £5.10.
He married Elizabeth Colwick on 1 June 1567 in Tiverton. She was the daughter and heir of Robert Colwick, a merchant taylor and clothier in Tiverton. From her father she inherited a moiety of the manor of Westmere, land in Tiverton, elsewhere in Devon, and in London. An IPM taken long after his death stated his heir was Elizabeth, wife of John Prosse of Tiverton. They had ten children.

I have another son baptised 15 April 1587 at Tiverton. The 4 last born sons: Roger (b 1580), Thomas (b 1582), Robert (b 1584) and Xtopher (Christopher) (b 1587) all died in 1591, Roger & Robert buried 11 September, Christopher 9 September and Thomas 13 July. The plaque was rampant in the summer of 1591 in Tiverton. His 3 surviving sons died within 15 years. Humphrey's re-deceased him and John's only child was Prudence. It was Richard's line that flourished with 3 sons living long lives - one with a large estate in Plymouth, one grandson in law in London (through Lord Clifford) the other via Oxford into the Church.
