Ian Mattey
I met my maternal grandmother only once, when I was about 5 or 6. My parents emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1957 and I was born at the end of 1958. Annie came over for a visit, I think a short while after her husband's death in 1963. I have very little recollection of her other than an impression that she was stern and disapproving. I recall posing for photographs outside our back door - I was wearing swim trunks only and wearing a green plastic beach pail on my head as a helmet. Or maybe I remember the photograph? I also recall my parents rented a cottage near a lake (Falcon Lake, if I recall correctly) for a week. It rained a lot and we played cards and did puzzles. I also recall that my mother, Maureen, went back to England in the weeks immediately prior to my grandmother's death to visit with her in hospital. We were living in Ottawa at the time.
