Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Isom Puckett I was a Virginia colonist.

Isham, son of Womack Puckett and Mabel Walthall, was baptized on 23 April 1724, Bristol Parish, having been born "14th octobr last".[1][2][3] He passed away sometime after 1775, possibly in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina, where his sons were documented.[4]

Records

Taxes - In June 1752, in Chesterfield Co, VA, Isham Puckett was on his own, on the tax list. This implies he was over 16, and therefore born before 1736.[5]

  • Listed next to each other:
    • Grouped together; Womack Puckett, Bows Puckett, Womack Puckett Junr.
    • Ephraim Puckett.
    • Isham Puckett.
    • Page Puckett. This man was born before 1736. Therefore, he is not the son of Isham Puckett, who was born in 1723. At most, Isham was 13 years old when this Page was born. Hence, this Page might be a brother of Isham Puckett. Alternatively, he might be the son of John Puckett, who named his son Page Puckett in his 1765 LWT. It was proven by oath of Page Pucket in March 1769, implying John's son was an adult before 1769.[6]
  • Listed close to above Pucketts:
    • Grouped together; Wm Walthall, Jamey, Abram, Dick, Harculis, Jno, Dinah, Pat, Sarah, Betty, Bess, Daniel Tery, Man.
    • Listed next to, grouped together; John Walthall, Dick, London.
  • Listed separately, throughout the same page:
    • Grouped together; Brazire Puckett, Jos Puckett Junr.
    • Wm Walthal.

Moved - Isham presumably moved from Chesterfield to Lunenburg.

Patent - On 25 Sep 1762, in Lunenburgh Co, VA, Isham Pucket for 235 acres on Taylors Creek bounded by Dukes line and James Hix.[7] Present day, Taylors Creek feeds into the Meherrin River in Mecklenburg Co, VA.

Taxes - In 1764, in Lunenburg Co, VA, both Isham Puckett, Senr. and Isham Puckett, Junr. are listed under St. Jas. Parish.[4]

Boundary Change - In 1765, Mecklenburg was formed from Lunenburg Co, VA.[8]

Deed - On 12 Nov 1774, in Mecklenburg Co, VA, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg to Allen Love, land in Mecklenburg where said Puckett now lives, adjoining John Bugg, John Harris, David Taylor & Lewis Parham, 235 acres, debt, 12 Nov 1774. Signed Isham Puckett (S his mark). Wit: John Wardrop, James Rose, Benjamin Harrison, John Malone.[9]

Deed - On 9 Oct 1775, in Mecklenburg Co, VA, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg Co to John Ingram Jr of Brunswick, land in Mecklenburg bounded by Clay, Harris, Page Puckett, a chopt line, 135 acres. Isham Puckett (X his mark), no witnesses. Acknowledged by Isham Puckett & Martha his wife.[9]

Deed - On 9 Oct 1775, in Mecklenburg Co, VA, Isham Puckett of Mecklenburg Co to Stephen Strange of Brunwick Co, land in Mecklenburg bounded by John Bugg, Lewis Parham, Clay, chopt [sic, ‘chopped’] line [probably meaning a line of chopped trees], 100 acres. Isham Puckett (X his mark), no witnesses. Acknowledged by Isham Puckett & Martha his wife.[9]

Warrant - On 31 Dec 1778, in Surry Co, NC, Isham Puckett was mentioned in the following record. It's unclear if this is for Senior or Junior. For more information about Pucketts found in Surry, see Puckett - Surry County, North Carolina Land Entries.

  • "#1208. SAMUEL HUMPHRIS enters 100 acres of land in Surry Co. on the FLATT SHOLE CREEK above the main road including ISHAM PUCKETT's improvement for quantity. December 31, 1778. [Warrant granted]"[10]

Research Notes

Logistical Considerations - Dates below represent the year said counties were formed.[11][8] 04:02, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

  • 1743 Bristol Parish was established. "Bristol Parish has served Charles City, Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie counties."
  • 1720 Brunswick Co, VA, from parts of Prince George (1703), Surry (1652) and Isle of Wight (1634) counties in VA.
  • 1746 Lunenburg Co, VA, from Brunswick Co (1720).
  • 1749 Chesterfield Co, VA, from Henrico (1611-1634). Chesterfield sandwiched between Henrico and Prince George.
  • 1765 Mecklenburg Co, VA, from Lunenburg Co (1746).
  • 1771 Surry Co, NC, from Rowan Co (1753).
    • VA counties adjacent to Surry Co, NC include:
      • 1791 Patrick Co from Henry Co (1777).
      • 1793 Grayson Co from Wythe Co (1790). Note Wythe from Montgomery.
      • 1842 Carroll Co from Grayson Co (1793).
  • 1776 Henry Co, VA, from Pittsylvania (1766).

Research Leads - Numerous Tax Records exist for the surname Puckett in the following area. Some of these records might represent some sons and/or descendants of Isham Puckett (subject of this profile). However, they may represent other, more distantly, related Pucketts. See 1822 Map VA.

  • Henry Co, VA
    • 1782 Thomas Puckett. Possibly Thomas Puckett Jr, son of Thomas Puckett (D10).
    • No Pucketts found in 1783 and 1784.
    • 1785, 1786, 1787A, 1788B, 1789A, 1790B Isham Puckett. Use caution, there are several Isham Pucketts being conflated. This is believed to be Isham Puckett Jr. (abt.1743-)
  • Patrick Co, VA created from Henry Co in 1791.
  • Surry Co, NC
    • 1816-1823, Pucketts are on tax lists every year. None found 1824-1826. Then one in 1827.

Location Research

  • Grayson County, Virginia, was not created until 7 Nov 1792, from Wythe County. He therefore could not have died there. Spratlin-29 17:16, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
    • See details about Grayson County in the Research Notes on his son Daniel's profile (click here).
  • Lunenburg County was created from Brunswick County in 1746.[8]
  • Bristol Parish never served Lunenburg County. In 1702, one of the counties it served was Prince George County (which was formed from Chales City County that year).[12]
  • Brunswick County was formed from Prince George County "1720-1734" ('the first is the "pending" formation date, and the second is the legally "effective" date').[8]
Conclusion: Since Bristol Parish and 1723 are correct,[2] then probably Prince George or Brunswick County would be the correct county. ~ Noland-165 19:17, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
  • "Christening Place: Bristol Parish, Prince George" listed in FamilySearch entry for his brother Ephraim.[13]
