A Story Of 6 New Zealanders:
"Mary Kenward, left with 2 very young children (Janet 5 months and Mavis, 2 years and 5 months), continued to live in the area in which she had grown up. She received a widow's benefit of 7 shillings and sixpence per week for each child which she supplemented by working as a nurse at Seacliff Hospital (board and lodgings plus 40 pounds per year). After WWI (1918), Mary and her children moved to the Catlins where Mary kept house for her brother Dave, and Sam McDowell, both were farming at Ratanui. Mary Kenward later met Robert Pettitt (Bob), and they were married in Oamaru on 9th August 1941. Mary Pettitt lived in Dunedin, 28 Reid Rd, until she died in 1964."
