John Purviance was born in Pennsylvania. He married Jane Wasson on 2 August 1764, and they soon settled on the south fork of the Yadkin River in Rowan (now Iredell) County, North Carolina. They were members of the Presbyterian Church, and John served as Justice of the Peace for a number of years. He served as a Lieutenant during the American Revolution. In 1791, he and his family moved to Sumner County, Tennessee. In the spring of 1792, his second son, John Purviance, was killed during an Indian raid on their small settlement, after which the family decided to move to Caneridge in Bourbon County, Kentucky. In 1800, the family returned to Tennessee, settling in Wilson County. John's wife, Jane, died in 1810, age 68. John died in August 1823. He and Jane raised 11 children (3 boys and 8 girls). The second child, David, became a well-known preacher.
