Biography

OBITUARY: Find them, love them, fellowship them. This was the model of evangelism of Reverend Howard Dean Quiett who went home to the Lord on January 17, 2023. Howard was born September 4, 1934 on a Texas farm in Scurry County four miles east of the Dunn Community to Houston and Garnett Quiett. Howard attended Dunn Schools for seven years until Scurry County Schools consolidated in 1948. He graduated in 1953 from Snyder High School.

Howard married Frances Reed on July 24, 1954. From this union came three children: Mrs. Cindy Woodard and husband Darrell of Vernon, Mr. Reggie Quiett and wife Marianne of Vernon, and Dr. Missy Mayfield and husband Britt of Vernon. Howard was devoted to his family and he and Frances were proud to witness their children's successes in their respective fields of service. He was grandfather to seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Howard was licensed to preach in 1955 by a Methodist District Conference. In March of 1956, while attending McMurry University in Abilene, he was appointed pastor at Nugent Methodist Church on the banks of the Brazos River. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMurry in 1959 and a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Methodist University in 1963. Howard's appointments to ministry included Texas churches such as Nugent/Anson Bethel Memorial, Caps Methodist near Abilene, Avoca Methodist, Aspermont Methodist, Shallowater Methodist, Canadian Methodist, Quanah Methodist where a new church was built, Dimmitt Methodist, Denver City Methodist, and Colorado City Methodist. After 42 years of active ministry, he retired in 1997 in Vernon, Texas.

Howard's long service in the Northwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church included leadership through District and Conference Boards of Ministry, District Audit Committee, and Butman Methodist Camp Board. He also proudly served as a school board member for Denver City ISD.

He was a Master Mason in the AF and AM Masonic lodges in Shallowater and Vernon. He became a 32° Mason in the Scottish Rite Lodge of Dallas in 1967 and was a charter member of the Lubbock Scottish Rite Lodge.
